Fatehpur Sikri is a magnificent fortress city and old Moghol Empire capital on Akbar’s reign from 1571 to 1585. The great Akbar devise the city as the capital of his dreams. It has been forsaken after his death because of irrigation problems. Several palaces like the old imperial harem are still there. The mosque Jama Masjid, is still welcome pilgrims and contain the tomb of a saint. Its huge door celebrate the conquest of Gujarat by Akbar in 1573. Behind the mosque, some scattered ruins overhang the valley.
Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km far from Agra, is on the top of a ridge, in the north of the modern town.
From the Idgah bus station in Agra, regular buses drive you to Fatehpur Sikri each 30 minutes.
